Busch Family Mausoleum

Inside Bellefontaine Cemetery stands one of St. Louis's most imposing family tombs: the Bavarian Gothic mausoleum built for brewing magnate Adolphus Busch.

The Story

Adolphus Busch helped transform Anheuser-Busch into an international brewing company and became one of the most powerful figures in St. Louis. After his death, that status was expressed in stone at Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Completed in 1915, the Busch Mausoleum uses a dramatic Bavarian Gothic Revival vocabulary that connects the family's German heritage with the monumental funerary architecture of America's Gilded Age. It is one of the cemetery's defining structures.

What Remains Today

The Busch Mausoleum remains at Bellefontaine Cemetery and is preserved as part of the cemetery's extraordinary collection of historic funerary architecture.
