A vanished alley remembered among the poorest corners of nineteenth-century St. Louis.

Clabber Alley was one of the crowded tenement enclaves north of downtown associated with poverty and the city's rough nineteenth-century street life.

The Story

Clabber Alley belonged to the dense maze of tenements and alleys that developed north and west of downtown as St. Louis grew rapidly in the nineteenth century.

Later histories place it alongside Wildcat Chute and Castle Thunder as shorthand for the extreme poverty and deteriorating living conditions found in parts of the near north side.

The alley and its built environment have vanished beneath later redevelopment, leaving the old name as one of the few traces of a neighborhood once familiar to St. Louisans.
